Overview Details YMCA - Delta House, Bournemouth Bournemouth BrightSPACE were invited by the YMCA & Valstera Property to design a complete refurbishment and remodelling of the YMCA in central Bournemouth. The building has been used by the YMCA for many years as supported "move-on" accommodation. The current arrangement of built form and the relationship between spaces is far from ideal, and improvements are needed to enable the YMCA to continue to deliver this vaulable and much needed service.Concept design involved careful stakeholder engagement and collaboration with a fantastic team of local consultants to ensure that the scheme provided the updated accommodation required as well as enhancing the facade of building. Proposals include renovations to the existing front block and partial demolition to the back block, which will be replaced with new purpose-built resident accommodation.Accommodation includes 108 en-suite rooms split over 13 cluster flats with communal cooking and lounge facilities at each floor. To the front of the site, plans include two additional storeys adding a seventh and eighth floor above the re-clad primary façade to accommodate nine independent studio flats. The replacement façade to the front block will reinstate Art-Deco features from the original 1930’s design to uplift the quality and feel of the street. Additional accommodation at street level will include a conference suite, gym and community café to engage the local community with the YMCA facilities. The proposals recieved planning approval in March 2023. We’re looking forward to seeing the designs evolve on site can’t wait to for works to begin on site in 2024. He was born in Zimbabwe and later moved to England when he was five and grew up in a small town called Bordon. Conrad studied Architecture at Portsmouth University and graduated in July 2021. During his studies, he developed a liking for Scandinavian design which incorporates a strong sense of functionality as well as being minimalistic and simplistic. He learnt many different aspects about design, and as a growing student he believes that the spaces we design should create a closer connection to each other alongside nature and the surrounding environment. ‘These connections play a big role in cultivating our physical and mental wellbeing. Therefore, the architecture we produce should always look to enhance these qualities.’Growing up Conrad always had a keen interest in sports and keeping a healthy active lifestyle outside of architecture. He enjoys boxing competitively and training in his local gym. Conrad also has an interest in cooking in his spare time and is always keen to learn new recipes to add to his cookbook.
