Overview Details Related Zen, Southampton High Street Southampton, Hampshire Zen is a contemporary Japanese restaurant located along Southampton High Street within the Old Town quarter of the City centre. The existing building is located on the corner of Southampton High Street and Bernard Street, a prime location that is surrounded by listed buildings, such as Holyrood Church and Woolwich House. Immediately to the east of the site is the Fruit and Vegetable Market which, has gained planning permission and recently begun on site for a predominantly residential scheme over 5 to 7 storeys. BrightSpace were approached by the existing owners to produce proposals for a mixed-use new build scheme that redevelops the existing premises through expanding the restaurant into the unused commercial space, while also providing 22 new apartments over five storeys. The appearance and selection of materials have been inspired from the nearby listed buildings and is an opportunity to unite the different styles of architecture by using high-quality materials which, respect the setting of the Old Town by using design cues that reflect the local context. The scheme has been the subject of consultation with planning officers and their feedback has been incorporated into the proposals to create a feasible scheme that will aid in the regeneration of Southampton in line with the Council’s ambitions - as set out in their City Centre Action Plan. We believe the proposal respects the setting of heritage assets and provides a high-end dining and living experience in Southampton City centre. Zen gained full planning approval in June 2017 and is currently in the technical design phase, due to commence on site in mid-2018.
